Queen Mary’s College (QMC) is a sixth form college in Basingstoke. It offers a diverse range of over 60 A Level and Vocational courses for students over 16 years old. With a track record of excellent results, QMC is one of the most successful colleges in Hampshire and one of the top 10% of colleges nationally based on the progress made by students since leaving school.
History and Location
QMC was established in 1974 as a result of the reorganisation of secondary education in Basingstoke. The college’s name is from the former grammar school Queen Mary’s School in the northern part of Basingstoke, which closed in 1972. The college is located in the former school buildings of the Shrubbery All Girls secondary modern, which date back to the early 1950s.
The college is situated on a large leafy campus on Cliddesden Road, close to the town centre and the railway station. The campus has been extensively refurbished and modernised over the years, with facilities such as a sports centre, a performing arts centre, a learning resource centre, a science centre, a media centre and a student hub.
Courses and Results
QMC offers a wide variety of courses for students with different abilities, interests and ambitions. Students can choose from over 40 A Level subjects, including traditional academic subjects such as English, Maths, History and Biology, as well as more contemporary subjects such as Film Studies, Psychology and Sociology. Students can also opt for vocational courses such as Business, Health and Social Care, Sport and Public Services.
In addition to their main courses, students can also take part in enrichment activities such as clubs, societies, sports teams, volunteering opportunities and trips. Some students also supplement their A Level programme with an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), designed to develop many skills required for higher education or employment.
