Odiham Castle, a ruined medieval fortress that was once a royal residence and hunting lodge. Located on the banks of the Basingstoke Canal, the castle is one of only three fortresses built by King John during his reign.

The castle was constructed between 1207 and 1214, probably as a convenient stopover point between King John’s strongholds at Winchester and Windsor. The castle consisted of an octagonal keep surrounded by a curtain wall and a moat. The keep had three floors and a basement, and was equipped with fireplaces, latrines and a well. The castle also had a chapel, a hall, a kitchen and other buildings within the enclosure.

The castle played an important role in the history of England, especially during the turbulent times of King John and his son Henry III. In 1216, the castle was besieged for two weeks by French knights who supported the rebel barons against King John after the failure of the Magna Carta to bring peace. The castle was defended by 13 knights and 20 crossbowmen, who managed to resist the attack until King John arrived with reinforcements.

In 1236, the castle was granted by Henry III to his sister Eleanor, who married Simon de Montfort, one of the most powerful noblemen in the country. Simon led a rebellion against Henry III, eventually taking over the rule of England himself in 1264. He was killed by royalist forces in 1265, and his lands and castles were confiscated by the king.

The castle gradually declined in importance and condition over the next centuries, becoming a hunting lodge and then a ruin. By 1603, it was described as “utterly decayed”. The castle was partly restored in the 18th century by Sir Benjamin Mildmay, who added brick walls and windows to the keep. In the 20th century, the castle was acquired by Hampshire County Council and opened to the public.

Today, visitors can explore the remains of the castle and learn more about its history through information panels and guided tours. The castle is also a popular spot for walking, cycling and picnicking along the scenic Basingstoke Canal.

Odiham Castle is a fascinating attraction that offers a glimpse into the medieval past of England and its royal family. Whether you are interested in history, architecture or nature, you will find something to enjoy at this castle.
