The Basingstoke Canal Society is a registered charity dedicated to the preservation and management of the Basingstoke Canal
History and Revival:
The society was originally formed in 1966 as the Surrey and Hampshire Canal Society. It emerged from the concern of a Brookwood resident who objected to the derelict state of the canal at the time.
By the mid-1960s, the Basingstoke Canal had fallen into disrepair and was at risk of abandonment.
The society’s objective today is to secure an environmentally sustainable long-term future for the canal, benefiting both its users and the community.
Current Activities:
The society owns two passenger boats that provide pleasure trips on the Basingstoke Canal:
John Pinkerton II: This boat operates from Odiham and can host up to 50 guests.
Kitty: The Kitty operates from The Town Wharf in Woking and accommodates up to 12 guests.
The trip season runs from March to October each year, with some festive trips in December.
Preserving the Canal:
The Basingstoke Canal Society works tirelessly to maintain and enhance the canal’s natural beauty, wildlife habitats, and recreational opportunities.
Their efforts include regular maintenance, restoration projects, and educational initiatives.
Visitors can explore the canal by taking boat trips, walking along its towpaths, or participating in volunteer activities.
Location and Contact:
The society’s headquarters, known as the Canal Centre, is located at Mytchett Place Road, Camberley, GU16 6DD.
Opening hours are as follows:
Tuesday to Sunday: 10:30 AM - 4:45 PM.
For inquiries, you can reach them at 01252 370073.
The Basingstoke Canal Society plays a vital role in preserving this historic waterway, ensuring that future generations can appreciate its beauty and significance
