More play areas set for major makeovers

Four more play areas have been earmarked for major makeovers in the next year as part of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s drive to continue to provide play spaces across the borough that are inclusive and well maintained.

Through its play area refurbishment programme, the borough council will replace the play areas at Two Gate Meadow play area in Whitchurch, Overton and Laverstoke ward, Watling End play area in Hatch Warren and Beggarwood ward, Cranesfield play area in Sherborne St John and Rooksdown ward and Arlott Drive play area in Norden ward.

Local people are being asked to give their views on the type of play equipment they would like to see at each area through an online survey. Feedback received by midday on Friday 25 April will be used to help shape the design of the replacement play areas.

The consultation on these four play areas follows hot on the heels of the start of the refurbishment work on the play areas at Sidlaw Close in Kempshott and Buckskin ward, Upper Sherborne Road in the Norden ward and Roseberry Close in Hatch Warren and Beggarwood, Abbey Road in Popley and Fennel Close in Chineham. Work to install these five play areas is expected to be completed late spring.

Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services and Housing Cllr Laura James said: “We know our play areas are important to families in the borough, giving young people access to free places to play and be active outdoors. We have 147 play areas across Basingstoke and Deane and we are working hard to make sure that they are all well maintained. Our play area refurbishment scheme identifies those play areas most in need of repair each year and we are in the process of delivering five new replacement play areas, which will be ready to enjoy in the summer.

"We are now also asking for local residents to give us their thoughts on what play equipment they would like to see included in these four play areas that need replacing. These views will be used to help shape the final designs and I encourage people to have their say."

Cllr James added: “But our investment in our play areas is wider than just these replacement play schemes. The everyday maintenance of our play areas is an enormous task and, in some cases, it might just be a single piece of equipment that needs to be repaired or replaced. To help to maintain our play areas across the borough we have committed funding this year to replace or repair individual pieces of equipment, where possible.”
