Man, 27, jailed for stealing alcohol from shop and threatening man in Basingstoke
A shoplifter has been jailed after he stole alcohol and threatened a man in Basingstoke.Daniel Jankovic, 27, of no fixed abode, stole a Jack Daniels gift box worth £49.99 from Nisa Local in Oakridge on 11 February. He fled the store and then threatened a man in his 40s.
Officers launched an investigation and arrested Jankovic. He was later charged with theft from a shop and common assault.
He pleaded guilty to both offences at Basingstoke Magistrates Court on Monday 17 February and was jailed for a total of 12 weeks.
Police Staff Investigator Zoe Hacking, from the Northern Area Crime Team, said: "Daniel Jankovic stole goods from the store in Oakridge and then threatened a man after fleeing the scene – this behaviour is not acceptable.
"Our officers launched an investigation and Jankovic was arrested, charged and sent to court. He will now spend time behind bars for what he did.
"Our message is clear – shoplifting will not be tolerated in the district. The actions of shoplifters make a huge difference to shop owners as they will have to recover the costs which have been lost. This results in shops typically increasing prices, which has a huge impact on the wider public.
"This result should send a clear message to others who are thinking about stealing from the businesses in our area. It will not be tolerated and we will work hard to bring you before the courts, where you will face the consequences."
