New play area now open at Sinclair Drive

Play time just got even better for children living near Sinclair Drive in Basingstoke following the completion of work to install a new play area.

The play space, owned by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, has undergone a major refurbishment and now includes new equipment for toddlers and juniors with a range of abilities, interests and needs.

It follows the completion of major remediation work to replace the underground soakaways underneath the open space near to the play area.

The new play space at Sinclair Drive is one of six in the borough being transformed in the next few months as part of the council’s play area refurbishment programme.

Just short of half a million pounds is being invested to replace the play areas at Sidlaw Close in Kempshott and Buckskin ward, Upper Sherborne Road in Norden ward and Roseberry Close in Hatch Warren and Beggarwood. The play areas at Abbey Road in Popley and Fennel Close in Chineham are also being refurbished through the programme.

The borough council is responsible for over 150 play areas in the borough and the refurbishment of these six, assessed as being most in need of replacement, is part of the council’s commitment to ensure these free play spaces are inclusive, well maintained and are fun places for families.

Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services and Housing Cllr Laura James said: “I’m so pleased this new play area is now open for local children to enjoy. A section of the old play area at Sinclair Drive had to be closed for a very long time and resolving this issue was a top priority for me. I would like to thank local residents for their patience while we carried out all of the necessary investigations and repair work to the open space before we could install the new play area.

“As a council we are continuing to invest in our play areas, refurbishing those most in need of replacement first. By late spring, we plan to have completed another five play areas in the borough and look forward to sharing more on this very soon.”
