Land sale to create new affordable homes proposed
More new affordable homes could be built in South Ham if Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council agrees to sell land it owns to a housing provider. The council’s decision-making Cabinet will consider proposals to transfer a small parcel of land it owns at the Camrose Stadium, in Western Way, to SNG.
If proposals are approved by the Cabinet at a meeting next Tuesday (11 February), the council would sell this section of land to SNG to allow the housing association to develop plans ahead of submitting a planning application for the redevelopment of the site.
The proposed deal follows SNG’s purchase of the wider land at the Camrose in December 2024, with the housing provider planning to provide new affordable homes on the site, subject to getting planning permission.
The move supports the council’s drive to work with partners to deliver more affordable homes, with a focus on social rent, to address the borough’s growing housing register.
Co-Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance and Property Cllr Gavin James said: “Doing everything we can to speed up the delivery of new affordable homes, especially homes for social rent, by working alongside our housing partners continues to be one of our key focuses.
“Following SNG’s purchase of the majority of the site and with limited opportunities for the small section of land we own, this is the best option available to us and would support the building of new social rented homes that our residents desperately need, close to the town centre and other facilities.
“We are committed to supporting grassroots sports opportunities and we are proposing to invest the proceeds from the sale of this land for football facility improvements in Basingstoke. We are supportive of Basingstoke Town Community Football Club’s ambitions for the future and will continue to work with the club to understand how we can support their aspirations for a sustainable future.”
