Jane Austen and VE Day 80 to be celebrated at Mayor’s spring concert
Local musicians are set to take to the stage in Basingstoke to the mark the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth in nearby Steventon and the 80th anniversary of VE Day.The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane’s spring concert will take place at The Anvil on Saturday 1 March at 7.30pm showcasing local singers and musicians including the Basingstoke Festival of Choirs, Basingstoke Gospel Choir, Hatch Warren Infant School and the Heritage Light Orchestra.
The concert, which will be compered by BBC South’s David Allard, will feature a wide range of music including 'Africa' originally by ToTo, 'J'ai Ho' from Slumdog Millionaire, 'When You Believe' from The Prince of Egypt, 'The Dambusters' March' and the theme from the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr Dan Putty will host the concert in aid of his Charity Appeal which is raising funds for The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation and the North West Hampshire Prostate Cancer Support Group.
Cllr Putty said: “The spring concert is a wonderful highlight of the mayoral year and I am especially looking forward to being in the audience to watch the performers celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th anniversary, as well as the rousing music which will mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
“Music is an excellent way to unite us and, as the theme of my mayoral year is community cohesion, what better way to bring communities together, and to celebrate the start of spring, than this amazing concert.
